Alawites believe that Ali ibn Abi Talib is a manifestation of God, similar to Jesus, a view that is considered heretical by most other Muslim sects and breaks the concept of Tawhid, or the oneness of God. They hold a trinitarian belief in Ali (meaning), Muhammad (name/veil), and Salman the Persian (gate), which diverges from mainstream Islamic monotheism.
They also incorporate mystical sufi and neoplatonist symbology and beliefs and a lot of them believe in reincarnation. They don't strictly practice the 5 daily prayers or participate in Ramadan.
This likely emerged from Syria being a melting pot of different civilizations. Elements of ancient Mesopotamian, Persian, and even Christian beliefs are found in Alawite teachings.
