If you really read their history, the Brits and French betrayed the Arabs after the the WW1 which lead to sectarian and tribalism in the region, instead of united Arabs nation. Assad from the minority Allawid tried to lead Syria with a unique approach where the Sunni and some minorities get civilian powers while the minority Allawid military leadership. The real mess started when the Islamist Muslim brother tried to kill Hafez in the 80s. Muslim Brotger and Baath had long history of issue with each other. The socialist Baath come from rural, while Sunni Muslim Brother many from traditional elites, land owner.. you know classical peasant vs land owner conflict but this time happened in our century. This is the start of real killing among each other in Syria.
