Munich realizes that deploying Linux was a disaster

Name: Anonymous 2016-09-22 16:38

In theory:
use linux
cheaper, more reliable and politically correct

Reality:
productivity suffering
unable to share files
Linux much more expensive

Why is this posted on /lounge/ (it's at least computer related, though not programming specifically) when this trash is posted on the front page of /prog/:

Sussman is programming related.

I use both Linux and Windows depending on what I need to do. Using Linux with a DE is almost exactly like using Windows. With the exception of differences in the available software libraries, there is no difference in the level of convenience between the two.

This isn't 2004 anymore. Most Linux distros today are perfectly modern and advanced operating systems.

Linux is a laptop/tablet OS. It's only useful for running a web browser and doing some shitty JavaShit-tier programming.

Windows is an industrial powerhouse, the state of the art.

Name: Anonymous 2016-09-22 19:29

I run Linux on my phone just like billions of other people do and it works fine.

Name: Anonymous 2016-09-22 19:30

This article is nonsense. If you read the actual source, it says that a few people are thinking about moving back to Windows. Nothing is actually decided and judging from the council, it seems like Linux won't go anywhere.

Linux is a laptop/tablet OS
So? It's 2016, laptops are what computers are these days, desktops will soon go the way of punched cards and vacuum tubes. Literally the only advantage they have, apart from taking up more space, is that they usually have better cooling - but any software/OS that requires that kind of cooling is horribly inefficient to begin with.

And besides, Linux is better for programming in general than Windows. The only kind of software development Windows is good for is .NET stuff; if you want to program in a language not supported by Botnet Studio you'll be doing it in an emulated GNU environment anyways.

And besides, Windows is horrendously bloated - 25 GB for a Win7 base install; you can have a perfectly usable Linux system with total hard drive space about half of that.

Desktops are not going anywhere, we are just not upgrading every year. Laptop Linux is rife with incompatible hardware, since all laptops are unique systems: there is monumental effort to add support for common laptop types, read LKML archives.

Laptop Linux is rife with incompatible hardware

Only if you're talking about laptops with Intel chipsets in them. Because while AMD sometimes complies with the demand for FOSS-compliant driver support, Intel actively screws over GNU/Linux users and developers.

I did a win7 install recently, took up the whole 500GB drive =D
Not really, it was about 12GB on a 120Gb(110gb) ssd

Android is putting on the pounds too, tending to take half of whatever storage is there

What the fuck is ``LiMux'', it looks like total shit: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LiMux
And why they didn't try something real like RedHat Enterprise?

Lel, same thing was said about traditional hard drives back in the 80s, yet I don't see solid state drives completely replacing them anytime soon.

More lies. I have still yet to find a compiler/interpreter that won't run on Windows, over 15+ years of concurrent Windows/Linux usage. But there are at least a dozen major compilers and IDEs that simply do not have a Linux port. Windows is better for programming (unless you're doing JavaShit/RoR webapps, in which case ann hiro).

I used linux desktop when windows was borked it was fucking awful. I did sudo apt-get upgrade and it broke my network manager
because of dependency hell. I had to write a shitty shell script to manually connect to the internet.

My experience says that Windows is quite painful to use and program for.

Note that actually only a few top officials in Munich strongly attack LiMux and that Microsoft has offices close to Munich. Remember that, if LiMux succeeds, and other governments (local or not) adopt it, it would be a huge problem for Microsoft, so Microsoft certainly is interested in LiMux going away.
Of course a lot of office people (read: non-nerds) aren't used to non-Windows but Linux seems to be OK for most 'plain' office jobs.

cheaper, more reliable and politically correct
Cheaper and more independent were the only arguments afaik. Political correctness (in the sense of software) isn't really a topic in mainstream politics.

unable to share files
Can't really understand this. Don't most office packages read all kinds of different document/spreadsheet files?

Linux much more expensive
Due to training, yes. The problem with this argument is that new versions of Windows also require training. With their own version of Linux, they would be independent of third-party (Microsoft) update schedules and feature changes, saving them money in the long run.

unable to share files
What this means in the context of op is that a person who creates a fancy document using MS Office isn't going to have perfect compatibility with those reading and editing the document in OOo. Simple documents are trivial but problems start happening when some of the more specialized features are used. This is actually the intention of Microsoft - they want to bind people into only using MS software.

I prefer OSX. It is Unix, but easy to use and without that commie crap.

Yeah but you can only legally run it on approved hardware. Linux runs on virtually anything, and if it doesn't, you're free to port it. If you care that much about "real Un*x", just use BSD.

BSD is the opposite of a hassle. It literally "just werks." It's like night and day compared to Linux. Even OS X is far more Byzantine than Open BSD.

The words "It just werks" have a negative connotation for me because of Todd Howard. Please avoid using them except for sarcasm.
