the idea of self driving cars is to eliminate dumb ape errors like texting or being drunk. machines don't have to stop paying attention. theoretically of course. we still don't know if self driving is tractable.

It's easy for me. The car should not be swerving to avoid people-sized obstacles. The reason is because humans would certainly do a worse job by reacting slower than a car could possibly work. The other reason is that if we train people to affect cars this way, we'll find trolls who deliberately mess with cars to a bad outcome for the whole of society.

Yes, the laws of physics are deterministic. That doesn't change the fact that cars have a minimum stopping distances and minimum reaction times under ideal driving conditions. When the driving conditions are less than ideal, the minimum distances are increase. I was actually referring to these theoretical limits that no self-driving car can overcome when traveling at a certain speed above crawling speed.
