Wtf is with resurgence of this meme and why it spreads?

I bet it started as a troll, just showing that debate skills matter more than facts. Then some retards actually took it seriously. Then some people who think they're smart thought it was an epidemic or some shit, when in reality there are very few people who actually believe this shit unironically, not as a troll/joke.

Have you ever noticed the tendency for unintelligent people to think they're super smart by pointing out something that either a) isn't widely thought or b) is a joke, and they take it seriously and think everyone else is dumb because clearly SO MANY people believe it, right?

That's what happened here. A few people got trolled into believing this garbage, but the reaction to that was really overblown. I have never met a single person who actually believed this shit, but I have heard people talking about how they believe the earth is round. Congratulations, do you want a prize for something as basic as that?

That's basically how I saw it. I remember in mid to late 2015, there were a few threads about it. Suddenly it was everywhere and getting a lot of attention by the general population, much like a forced meme. Perhaps it's a way to connect regressive views such as racism and sexism with absurdly regressive views like flat Earth. "It's 2018, and people still believe this???" type of thing.

I think in adddition to this, with the entrance of the internet into th mainstream, people have become more reactionary. Previously when someone had a crazy, fringe veiw like that, the greater poplulace would perhaps laugh at it, but more generally be indifferent.
