Why Filial Piety (in Asian Cultures) is Bullshit

It's one thing to control your children when they're under 18 or living in your house but it's unspeakable to continue to brainwash them and try to control their lives when they're over 18 and especially living on their own and making their own money.

It's actually pretty smart and far sighted. In western culture old people just wither away lonely and alone while draining the state. There's not one functioning retirement system in europe. Society lives and dies on family. The recession of the west correlates with family breaking apart.

Being a single working capitalist drone brings short term profit but fails with time. After reaching a certain age these people loose meaning and there's nobody there to replace them because they did not think of anybody but themselves. Civilisations fail this way: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pW-SOdj4Kkk .

Of course don't throw out the baby with the bathwater and take it to the extreme. I do think some european family cultures are superior, but what can you do? You've to sell this to the unwashed masses and people are more receptive to their own culture.

It only works when you don't have corrupt and selfish parents who milk their kids for everything or brainwash them to try to control them well into adulthood even when they don't need their parents' financial support anymore.

It only works if both sides treat the other fairly. When one exploits the other, the other will say fuck it and filial piety falls apart. I think that's the situation that the OP's video is talking about: too many Asian kids are choosing to rebel against their filial duties because their parents are too selfish, controlling, corrupt, or unreasonable.

Legal age in China is 14, not 18.
