So my momma wanted to watch some of my "annie mays", and I had no idea what to play for her, but I didn't want to stick to the usual, obvious Ghiblis. At first I wanted to get Madoka for her, but she isn't really into heavy drama so I don't think episode 3 onward would be very comfortable for her to watch. But I changed my mind and played the movies anyway.
We started the first movie and my mom was passively crocheting, I had it set on the english dub since this was her first anime (baby steps lol) The first thing that stuck out to her was Madoka's relationship with her mom, she thought that it was really sweet! She noticed that the dad stayed at home and thought that he "seems like a really nice husband"
She kind of passively watched the school part but when Kyubey was first introduced she put down her crocheting stuff and actually started getting really into it.
She asked me about 50 questions through both of the movies and there was actually a few that I couldn't answer! They mostly revolved around the second movie and about the different time lines. I honestly didn't know if they had answers but I wondered if other people had the same questions as her.
(After I explained that there is a literal planet of Kyubeys) Why is it that Homura didn't just freeze time and kill every Kyubey as they appeared?
My only logical answer was that there is a literal PLANET full of them and it would take longer than Homura had until Madoka became a magical girl. But then she asked why didn't she just go to Kyubey's planet and wipe them out. I honestly had no idea. Maybe just because she didn't know where it was or how to get to it? Maybe because they created the energy needed to run the universe (so they're kind of necessary?)
2. Why does only Homura, Sayaka and Mami remember Madoka after she ascends to Godhood?
My theory on that is Madoka can kind of choose who she want's to remember her but that can't entirely be right...does it have something to do with Homura's time powers and if so how exactly would that affect her memory?
3. How did Madoka's little brother remember her?
That one I actually had no answer for except because magic??
4. Where the wraths just a way to balance out Madoka's good energy/karma?
My explanation was that if there is one part good there has to be one part bad. It's the balance of the universe, which I feel was somewhat explained at some point of the show. Although I knew the answer to it she asked some really good questions that did make me think a bit deeper into the show.
Through all of the serious questions she asked she did make some funny comments, here's a few:
"Why does Sayaka like Kyosuke? He looks like kind of a dork"
"Does Homura like Madoka? Like, LIKE like her?"
"How has no one noticed an orphaned child wandering around stealing food and playing arcade games??" (refering to Kyoko. Also how did she pay for that arcade game???)
"How has no one heard this fight happening? It's an alley, it would echo!" (Kyoko and Sayaka's fight when they first meet)
"Is she eating a bread fish?? That's so cute! Where do you get those??" (Kyoko eating a bread fish thingy)
"Why doers she have such a big chest? She's in middle school." (Referring to Mami's big anime tiddies)
And lastly "This is where all your money goes? Jesus Christ." (She doesn't even know how much I've spent on my collection lmao)
