I don't know what you mean by "not very original", because other mahou shoujo have done the same thing.

The shitstorms are pretty funny, but the writing is shit. The art and animation are shit. It's all pretty generic. The character interactions are pretty straightforward. The music is pretty generic, and the OP/ED are pretty much the only things that contribute to the overall feel.
Madoka is a good series but not great. It has some really cool action sequences but the writing is terrible. The character development was really poor, and the whole "Are you ready for the most intense magical girl show ever" part was almost comical.

It's not what you would call mainstream, and that's probably due to the fact that it won't appeal to everyone, but it's still a good show and worth a watch. I thought it was going to be a generic mahou shoujo show with a bunch of ordinary girls that went to a magical girl show. I also thought it would be generic at beginning with the leader's introduction, and that it would eventually devolve into something stupid and dark.
The only problem is that after it did something weird and unexpected, it straight up turned into a generic mahou shoujo show with a bunch of ordinary girls and normal characters.
I can't unsee that.

Avengers was the first anime to gross more than $100 million worldwide, and that was before it got catered to a Japanese audience. Granted, it also got catered to a US audience.
