[PRIVILEGE] Things I Never, Ever Want to Hear Again

Name: Shanley 2013-09-03 22:20

I’ve met the most amazing people I know through the feminist community — a community growing and growing inside the tech industry. [...] They’ve given me a great deal: empathy, grace, understanding, camaraderie, courage.
At the same time, literally thousands of white men have engaged me solely to derail, discredit and co-opt conversation about systemic inequalities and the lived experiences of marginalized and oppressed people in our industry. [...] They bring nothing to the table except a predictable litany of false martyrdom, victim-blaming, [...] and totally unexamined privilege.

As seen on proggit. If this is considered shitposting, I won't do it again, I promise.

Oh great, another linear scale polarization (you know what I'm talking about, right-wing vs left-wing, capitalism vs communism, etc.). And both sides would have you believe there are exactly two possibilities, and if you're not one, you must be the other.

Feminism Socl Justc Tumblr 2.0: You must be empathetic and nice to everyone and really make sure you don't offend anyone, in particular minorities or women. While I may recognize free speech to be a thing, I will physically assault you (and invite others to do the same) if I hear you say or type anything negative about a disprivileged group. My definition of humor is universal. My system of social analysis is universal, and every other system must be wrong. I am also opposed to universalism. My misguided personal definitions of feminism and privilege prevent me from even considering the possibility of injustices favoring a disprivileged group. I also ``vent'' by making blanket statements about privileged groups and complaining about how they make blanket statements, all while remaining oblivious to irony. Incidentally, I believe that blanket statements about disprivileged groups constitute hate speech and should be illegal regardless of context (including private communications). Gender is obviously an exclusively cultural thing. Online communities should all be safe and nice to everyone. White males cannot be feminists, and must instead use the separate but equal term ``ally''.

Anti-feminism White Male RedditorTM: Feminist? Moar liek feminazi! Free speech means I can loudly chant ``kill all niggers and rape all women'' in a crowded bus every day, and if the bus company tells me to stop (after I get out of the hospital) it's illegal censorship and oppression! The moral value of promiscuity is highly dependent on one's gender. Speaking of which, gender is obviously an exclusively biological thing. I can't participate in feminist discussions (nor in any kind of IRL discussion) since I am unable to shut the fuck up for five minutes and listen. I am that person on IRC who logs in, asks a question, gets frustrated that none of the unpaid volunteers have immediately jumped to his rescue, insults everyone in the channel, and leaves within two minutes. If an online community does any kind of self-policing or moderation, it's illegal censorship and oppression, and the EFF, Reporters without Borders as well as the United Nations must hear about it at once! I am the 99% of youtube comments.
