programming without degree?

can you get a good paying job programming without having a degree?

Name: Anonymous 2013-12-28 11:20

yes

Yeah, I have no degree. My first job wasn't a programming job: I was sort of a sysadmin/fixit guy for a 30-person company, but I had about 6 hours free a day, so I programmed. After that I had "programming experience" on my resume (never mind the steaming shit pile that was my programming experience) and could get a real programming job.

Sorry, it's worth mentioning that hiring someone to be a sysadmin for a company that size is hard because it's a shitty, low-paying job no real sysadmin would ever touch. Thus it is your door to greater things.

Yeah, it's about a wash whether you finish school or not in terms of time, and I think school gives you more options. I regret not going for sure.

Yes. But a degree gives you more chances.

Of course, you need a MIT degree, because nobody cares about your community college, nigga.

Yeah, "smart privilege." Do you really think you're doing anyone a favor by whining?

The issue here is recontextualization, not `whining'. Using the concept of privilege anywhere outside of a sociopolitical theory class or discussion group sounds a bit like those new age writers who put in random (and erroneous) references to quantum mechanics in their books.
