Gender stuff

Name: Anonymous 2014-05-04 14:15

What's with the gender stuff? Especially the tendency of some posters to use ``ey'', ``them'', et cetera. Am I missing some fad that you guys are getting yourselves into in your real life OR some other online forum/community?

I am aware of the LGBT movement and whatnot, so that's that? Some of us here are part of this movement? Is it because of your ``openmindedness'', or are you a lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender?

Or perhaps it's some semantics enthusiast who longs for a gender-neutral spoken language?

If you want my sincere opinion, I think this whole thing is dumb. As dumb as getting a hissy fit on the use of the word ``nigger''. (or ``jew'')

Honestly I want to believe that /prog/ is populated by smart beings who don't have such stupid intellectual preconceptions. But you are lucky if such are your intellectual preconceptions: It's easy for others to point them out to you, and it's easy for you to understand them. What about me? I have no popular misconceptions. All my misconceptions are dark corners in an otherwise lit room. Nobody will point them out. Will I find out by myself?

I, for one, hate gender as it limits behaviour for no good reason. In general, I hate the identity equivalent of every common descriptor (race, sexual ``orientation'', etc).

I personally find that the LGBT movement has gone too far in the direction of identity theory instead of doing the sane thing and rejecting it altogether. If you're male or female or straight or gay or trans or whatever else and you define yourself through that and you let that govern you and determine your entire personality and social interactions, and you go as far as wanting people to use a specific pronoun when referring to you just to acknowledge that you are indeed in a certain social group, it's your right but you're a fucking dumbass.

Reclaiming a word? Group shit.
Mad because someone outside your group uses a word? Group shit.
Appropriation? Group shit.
The occasional men vs women bullshit? Group shit.

For this reason, I refuse to acknowledge gender (i.e. sex identity) in other people by not using gendered pronouns; it's not out of respect, it's out of disrespect.

But you are lucky if such are your intellectual preconceptions: It's easy for others to point them out to you, and it's easy for you to understand them. What about me? I have no popular misconceptions. All my misconceptions are dark corners in an otherwise lit room.
That's the same for everyone. They're not even dark corners, they're the shadows behind the furniture; you don't see them normally, for otherwise you could get rid of them.

Nobody will point them out. Will I find out by myself?
Maybe.
