2014: The year of VM on the desktop

Why do I give foreign developers access to my SSH keys everytime I $package_manager get some untrusted code? Is anyone looking at npm? pip? Why isn't my banking actvity seperated? Should I run my day-to-day desktop operating system in a VM? _{(Is this already happening behind my back?)}

I'm too old to endlessly play around with new technologies. Which hosts, guests & hypervisors does /prog/ recommend?

So far I'm thinking FreeBSD as host, XP/ubuntu guests for various tasks w/ qemu as hypervisor.

I used to run Plan 9 in a VM under OpenBSD.

Now I just carry around two Thinkpads, one for each OS.

In general, if a VM uses up $20 worth of RAM, why not get a $25 Raspberry Pi to run it on real hardware?
