It is 40,000+ lines of disgusting C++.

Guess what, the popular argument works here because there isn't any other argument that explains it. The developers of the world choose rtorrent because it works and it works today. You couldn't say the same was true for Unworkable, it was just a toy that needed more work before it was useful.
