Microsoft seeks to recruit autistic workers

The tech giant is to start by offering 10 places on a pilot scheme based at its Redmond headquarters.

Senior executive Mary Ellen Smith said: "People with autism bring strengths that we need at Microsoft, each individual is different, some have amazing ability to retain information, think at a level of detail and depth or excel in math or code. It’s a talent pool that we want to continue to bring to Microsoft!"

Many may have strengths such as accuracy, a good eye for detail and reliability, which can benefit all sorts of businesses, not just the technology industry.

I enjoy making pedantic posts on BBSen, therefore I am autistic as defined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.

Autists can't save MS, because the (enterprisey) code is determined by the company(business retards).
Also if they just want reliable code(under the assumption autists don't make mistakes, which is like something lifted from a movie), why not use a theorem prover or some kind of static analysis, instead of relying on mythical "supercoder" autists.
Autists team programming would be a spectacle,something like live /prog/. A bunch of anti-social autismal neckbeards, each with really strong views on "how the code should be implemented" trolling one another and getting trolled by management demands about the code. Other programming gurus, such as Herb Sutter, lead designer of Microsoft's C++/CLI programming language, predict that writing code to run on bare metal may come back into fashion, as chip makers find themselves unable to keep boosting processor speeds at current rates.

"I think we have maybe five to 10 years left [with Moore's Law]," he said. "Optimizations will get very, very sexy again, when people realize how we pay for abstractions."

Also, Sutter said, programmers need to start writing apps optimized for parallelized, multicore PCs, which have been available for the past several years.

But he also emphasised that working with autistic people can be "a very complex issue".

"We can make many mistakes because people with Asperger are very demanding people," he said.

"People with autism are very concrete, unequivocal," added Elke Seng, a "job coach" at Auticon who assists the employees in their relationships at work and with clients.

"There is no innuendo, there is only one or zero. It's rather nice," she smiled.

Mueller-Remus said that "their CVs often have brief episodes of work interspersed with long interruptions".

Often people with autism "have no situational awareness, may seem arrogant, have no interest in small talk, and are not interested in people because people are not logical," he said.

All of this can give rise to misunderstandings with sometimes serious consequences, he said.

In this context, the SAP initiative was widely applauded at the small company.

"That more people with autism can access a job is simply fantastic," said Seng, who confessed she finds her work "fascinating".

I know this test is bullshit since i don't have autism(whoever designed this thought autism==socially awkward nerd). There only 2-3 questions about stereotypical autists("recognizes patterns", "collects info about about field of interest") which are common in neurotypicals too. I have a personal wiki database to keep things in memory(would look incredibly autistic without context, but i have poor memory and quickly forget important stuff and details).
