Syntax highlighting is for suckers.

I've turned off EXCEPTIONS

Honestly with Lisp it wouldn't even be that bad without highlighting.

But even Borland Turbo C had syntax highlighting!

It's been pretty good so far. You should try it.

It'd work well for something like Modula too.

I only use it to quickly discriminate comments and code. Outside of that, it really is useless.

I still have it turned off. I think this is the highest return (a bit) on investment (almost nothing) I've ever achieved writing Emacs Lisp.

While I understand in certain circumstances it would not be much of a loss, I fail to see how turning it off could ever be a gain

In Lisp, it is less distracting. The fact that some special core form is used couldn't be less important, yet syntax highlighting draws your attention to parts that are not worthy of it. Who gives a shit that lambda was used?

You can see other effects in other languages, even though they aren't as strong as they are in Lisp. For instance, when type highlighting does not exist, declarations might need better formatting, which is a net win. Good habits can emerge this way.
