Why does he seem so happy in all these stories? Like he's just excited to be alive? He'll just say shit about what he's doing? Doesn't he ever consider he might be looked down upon if it doesn't work out? The man is too damn confident. This fake-friendliness must part of some sort of cruel joke. He probably talks to people and leads them on wild goose chases to waste their time. He's like some sort of trickster god or something. There's no way he can be this candid and not have ulterior motives.

Your message was perhaps one of the strangest pieces of email I have ever received. Although it is flattering to have a ``fan club'', in fact, it is a very bad idea. Unlike most of human society, science and engineering are based on the idea that each of us is capable of evaluating evidence and thinking on our own. Each of us can do experiments, work out the reasoning, and determine the truth for ourselves. There is no room in science or engineering for ``fans'' representing group approval over individual thought. One of my heros, Galileo, put it very well:

In questions of science, the authority of a thousand is not worth the humble reasoning of a single individual.

I am pleased to talk with people about matters of science or engineering, so you and your colleagues may certainly send me mail. I hope to learn as much from your experiences as you may learn for me. But please get rid of the ``cult of personality'' way of thinking. It is unscientific and ultimately destructive.

The joke is infecting people with software idealism. Then they go in the real world and discover the wonders of C and Java and emerge scarred

Sussman is wrong here. Deep Learning is winning, and looks like it's the way to strong AI.
Lisp may play a role in this though, as a simple yet turing complete language for DL agents to program in.

Deep learning goes a bit farther in recognizing and reacting to assocations, but it can't introspect on concepts. Therefore it is useless for strong AI.
