de-iPhoneizing smartphones

Name: Anonymous 2016-06-16 15:47

would it be feasible to create a smartphone that isn't shit? by isn't shit I don't mean suckless approach of making it 'better' by reducing codebase - just making it open, based around unix philosophy and as close in usage to a computer as possible. basically, a pocket-sized linux box with GSM/3G/LTE functionalities.

the 'computer' side of things should be easy: pick a popular processor architecture like ARM or x86 and an actively maintained linux distribution and it will already have drivers for network cards every I/O device under the sun from keyboards to teledildonics toys. add a low-res screen (after all, it won't be used for 'apps' with their huge interfaces but with programs designed for bigger screens), a small joystick with two buttons to emulate a mouse, a small QWERTY keyboard and a li-ion battery and you have a custom-made PDA which does smartphone things like web browsing or (if you add a webcam) photography and beats tablets by the virtue of running on an a real operating system.

the bigger challenge would probably be the telecommunication-related shit, although I'm not sure how much bigger. certainly, implementing the whole GSM stack would require crazy amounts of work but maybe some basement dweller already did it and made it open-source. maybe even android or firefoxos made their implementations available, haven't checked.

if we could make a device that could do all this shit, there'd be no reason to own a smartphone as it would be better at both productivity and wasting your time (because who needs f2p p2w 'games' when you can just ssh to nethack.alt.org?). more importantly, it would be free of cancer such as DRM, locked bootloaders, lack of root access, simlock and vendor or government backdoors. it would be a phone you actually own.

Or you could be realistic, root Android and install a chroot distro alongside your apps.

Unless distro maintainers actively work towards a decent smartphone distro, we will be stuck with shitty crippled Linux hacked together with terrible battery life and no hardware support. This is not feasible, plus smartphones still have those retarded touchscreens you can't type with.

I'm guessing that's why the OP specifically mentioned an addon keyboard and battery. Also, you talk about maintainers as if it isn't your own responsibility to code the platform to do what you want.

I already did that, but here's a thing: I never use my phone to control the chrooted system, I always ssh to it from my desktop. small fonts make it annoying, lack of keyboard makes it infuriating, touchscreen instead of mouse is just a cherry on top.

why don't they do it though? mobile Ubuntu isn't very desktop-like (come the fuck on, if I install Ubuntu on a phone I probably want something desktop-like, not poor man's Android) and it works like shit even when compared to plain Ubuntu which has bloated graphical environment and fucking ads, mobile KDE would seem promising if not for the fact that designing a distro around a graphical environment is a dumb idea (especially for people who have enough brains to ditch KDE, Gnome and Unity in favor of a lighter environment or - even better - just X and a good TWM).

There is no need for open sores hardware. It will crash and fail horribly. What I do is use a feature phone/dumb phone with a prepaid SIM and then any old smartphone on airplane mode as a PDA in the other cargo pants pocket.

I wish it wasn't so fucking hard to find a decent dumb phone nowadays. It seems impossible unless you live in India or some other third world shithole.

Phones already did more than enough. Being able to make and recieve calls and sms. The onlything you need ti add to that is a way o block specific numbers. None of this colored images and swiping and apps that let you meet homosexuals.

I barely use a mobile phone, I have one, but I keep it turned off and at home 99.99% of the time.

But it's too late.

At work, Microsoft changed their security policy recently for third-party vendors and contractors, now they require two-factor video authentication to renew account passwords for internal TFS access. I have to go in Monday, and let them record my face over Skype on my mobile phone as I answer security questions and get my persona uploaded into their botnet for permanent tracking and profiling.

I'm worried this is something deeper, like what the elites intend to do for the whole country, especially considering Microsoft's relationship with the New America Foundation and Facebook's recent announcement that "everything" in normie social media will be video in 5 years.

Want to be allowed on the Internet? Better go get your Internet License, take anti-extremism and feminism courses, and get registered with two-factor video authentication and biometrics.

I use my phone to shitpost on 4chan and ban evade. I also run a tor relay on it, because AT&T was dumb enough to give me an unlimited plan like ten years ago, and I haven't changed the contract.

You have to fight the system from the inside. You should get into the Windows telemetry developer group and make an "honest mistake" that kills that malware off every single PC on the planet. "Change happens from within."
