internet is a legacy system

Name: Anonymous 2016-07-13 14:30

I've been doing some protocol-related work and noticed how complex and ugly most of them are. many of them perform relatively simple tasks so theoretically, they should be straightforward but none of them are. then it dawned on me: SSL/TLS or IMAP or anything shat out by IETF (HTTP, IPsec etc.) are ugly not because they're designed by idiots. they are ugly because they're not designed at all, they're ugly hacks built upon ugly hacks. they're all extensions of ancient systems which were never supposed to be used the way we use them, but even those extensions are built without foresight for future problems. thus, exponential growth of RFCs, the advent of Turing complete protocols (hello langsec) and the overall insanity of it all.

the internet is worse than x86. no, it's worse than a Java solution to read XML files generated by a Perl script which extracts them from an obscure format used by a MUMPS or Cobol mainframe older than every single programmer in the company. and that's just on the protocol level.

That's exactly how the Web works though.

Using the term "legacy system" implies that there is a newer system that's in use today. Is this true for the case of protocols that connect the Internet?

sure Anon, we're all going to browse Moldbugweb in 10 years. we'll use repurposed Cudderbrowser for that and eveyrthing will run on TempleOS.

God told Terry that TempleOS will not have networking.
