Have you ever noticed that when you are in command
of a mission-critical technology and the foreign
governments send field agents to ensnare you, they
dress oh so provocatively at first (bare midriffs,
gleaming legs, wild Parisian couture) until you
take the jail, I mean, the bait. Then suddenly at
the next treff, they have turned ultra-conservative
(monochrome outfits, no Lippenstift, modest manners) --
because they have entered into Phase Two of their
assignment. They are also trained to refuse at first
whatever you offer them, but at second tender they show
how eager they were all along. They especially love to
receive something tangible that they can send back to
the rezident in D.C. -- a document, a negotiable instrument,
or a geek code listing. Then they disappear for a few days
either to re-establish your level of hunger, or for
consultation +/- training back at their equivalent of
The Farm, whether it be the Sverdlovsk Spy School, the
Shaolin Monastery, or the bonny brays of Brigadoon.
And you wonder if the Brown Recluse spider that you
stomped in the bathroom this morning is the same one
that got away from you last night in m'lady's bedroom,
and who is deploying them in such an onslaught, and why?
Is is because another
