General AI

What is the point of having a General AI instead of highly-tuned(optimized) specialized software fit for the task?
I.e. the "human-like AI" vs domain-specific software

this is the first case though: attempting to apply human-like learning to performing certain tasks so that the machine is able to solve unanticipated problems. that's just standard example of technology taking influence from biology - not unlike genetic/evolutionary algorithms
