True AI for True NLU
It is not enough for a massive code-base of software to use statistical methods to guess its way into NLU. True NLU requires True AI which is based on a linguistic Theory of Mind and which puts persistent concepts to work in natural language understanding. The following MindGrid diagram shows how the MindForth Robot AI and the Ghost Perl Webserver AI understand the input of a human user who enters “You see boys”.
The artificial Mind interprets “You see boys” internally as “I see boys.” The input sentence goes into auditory memory as a series of words, and into conceptual memory as inhibited nodes on the concept-fibers for the self-concept of “I” and the verb-concept of “see” and the noun-concept of “boys”. The mention of “boys” by the human user causes the AI Mind to respond “Boys play games” because the concept of “boys” in the AI knowledge base is activated as part of of an idea known to the AI — boys play games. In an AI Mind full of knowledge about boys and games and the world at large, chains of thought will meander and reverberate. So yes indeed, it is a good time to be in NLU.
