Auto-pilot was working correctly, this is how auto-pilot is supposed to work. Your confusion is in the your definition of auto-pilot and Tesla's definition. Tesla gets their definition of auto-pilot from the aviation industry and their implementation follows after the aviation model of auto-pilot.
