Why is SICP so good?

Why is it considered an important work of computer science education? I read it out of curiosity last year, it's nothing special. It teacches some useful basics but quickly diverts into masturbatory academic drivel.

You are confused if you think SICP is intended to teach programming. SICP's goal is to teach fundamental computational ideas that are valid in all cases with and without a computer.
