C compilers used to cost a lot of money and then the FSF made one and gave it away for free.

Because of GCC, a C compiler is as readily available as an assembler, which lets C spread everywhere.

Without GCC, people would focus more on making languages that don't need C because they wouldn't want to rely on a C compiler because they already have their own compiler.

Someone would make a free compiler eventually, but there's no guarantee it would be a C compiler. They might have hated C and then we wouldn't even be having these discussions about C vs Rust, Type-Safe C, {}[], C++, Java, JavaScript, or any of this.
