The first is that they got tired of teaching it! I wouldn't blame them for wanting to retire from teaching the same material every year for decades on end. The MIT computer science curriculum is still there for people who want it. It's not a bad thing that there are people who want to learn fundamental programming principles to assist their vocation without the need to study the computer science that underpins the programming.
