The reason Firefox/Chrome/IE/Safari have no competition, is because difference between them and hypothetical "great browser" is too small.i.e. they're not shitty enough to switch.
Once however people get fed up with major browsers, they'll start seeking alternative, allowing a time window where another browser can be popularized(the catch is the browser must be done way before that to compete, before any popularity).
So the hypothetical "next great browser" would have to be maintained for years, until its moment to shine - this doesn't sound like a great motivation for commercial development, making such projects only of concern to amateurs who want to change the web.
