Government vs. private sector programming jobs

Which is better?

I heard you can make more money in private sector, but sometimes tech companies crash and burn, or they want you to work crazy hours. But a government job seems like it would be more laid back. Good benefits, good job stability, maybe not the best salary. But while Silicon Valley startups come and go, government is here to stay, so you'd have more peace of mind.

What have your experiences been? Which would you suggest, and why?
