The Slack plague

How did it become the _de facto_ standard text communication program for developers? The executable is over 100MiB; it’s a fucking glorified ICQ. And of course, with the bloat containing mysterious features and a whole fucking virtual OS (chrome is not a browser), it is unstable as fuck.

Electron is owned by Github which is now owned by Microsoft. It was originally "Node-Webkit", which was Node plus a layout engine (you can call it "Node in a browser"). It was forked into Electron which used a different layout engine and eventually the whole Chromium VM, and used to develop Atom, as a marketing tool (just like Nikita wants to develop a game in Symta to market his language). Soon, there was an app market and the developers flooded in... It's not like you develop software anymore, you are licensed to program a tool, falsely claimed to be non-proprietary, not because you profit from it, but because you are caught in a web of causation which is invisible to you. You are one of the many who write code to popularize a platform, a platform you do not control, and this same "population" strategy is used everywhere, not only by Microsoft but by Apple, by Ubuntu, by Google, to up-value their platform with what probably counts as free labour, and all they really need to do is watch out and remove the weeds, the bad apples, the malware or simply bad software which breaks their Users' precious eXperience.

In sum, this is the new strategy all the big players are now playing. They all have an "app market", are trying to popularize programming, have absolute control of their platform while attempting to appear free-software-friendly, get a cut of paid software and gratis software is coupled to their platform while they pay nothing for it. The more software a platform has, the more Users are likely to want to choose that platform in stead of the next one when choosing to buy their phone, their personal computer, et cetera.
