I currently use Ubuntu Linux, on a standalone laptop—it has no Internet connection. I occasionally carry flash memory drives between this machine and the Macs that I use for network surfing and graphics; but I trust my family jewels only to Linux.

What's so important on his Linux machine that he has to airgap?
"air gaps" with memory cards or flash drives aren't real air gaps
he probably has an ancient version of ubuntu with tons of known vulnerabilities by now, and if he gets malware on his memory card, it can do things on his laptop

Probably it's just that the LaTeX installation takes so much space that there is no room for network drivers.
