That was a realistic worry when Windows was the leading desktop OS and desktops were the only personal computers. Today, MS just doesn't have the market power to get to the "extinguish" step anymore. They're one player in a bunch of *nix dominated spaces (phones, web, cloud). Hence the need to actually work with other OSs to some degree.
