Joe didn't think for a second that myriad of free software he takes for granted was possible because of GNU competing with commercial software. He would be downloading cracked, trojaned warez from some russian servers if not for abudance of free alternatives and open-source. The network effects of abudant open-source that enabled currect software/hardware ecosystem would be impossible if single large corporation dominated the market, such as Microsoft or IBM.
