As for C, it's portable assembly. What really sucks immensely is its lack of a module system and standardization, and the horrendous amounts of shit you end up having to do with automake/conf/shit, how slow compilation is, and all the bullshit around everything from the fucking idiotic int type to the disnayingly bad and incomplete standard library. It's a miracle anything got achieved at all.
