Learning Greek

Name: Anonymous 2020-02-11 19:30

I'm making a monster name generator for my game. Traditionally video game monsters have Greek names. So I need to know basic Greek inflection rules to turn noun into an adjective, suitable for monster name. For example greek word for gold is "chrysos" (yes, Jesus Christ got greek surname). Now would "chrysis" be the correct word for golden? Now Google Translate claims it is chrysafenous, but I'm dead sure the ancient Greek word for "golden" is "chrysis", and google translate also translates "chrysis" as "golden". WTF is with that chrysafenous?

BTW, books on Ancient Greek language cost like a fortune
https://www.logos.com/product/55646/encyclopedia-of-ancient-greek-language-and-linguistics
>$849.99

That is US dollars. Imagine paying that much for a stack of paper!

"Christ" is unrelated to "chrystos", it comes from the word "khristos" (anointed). You're probably confused by the fact that "Khrystos" is the ukrainian word for Christ.

There's no "chrysis" in attic greek, it's a latin ablative (they used the greek word too) "Chrysafenious" is modern greek, hence the google translation.

You just need to use it as a prefix, like "chrystomoros" for "golden imbecile"

There's a ton of free resources online to learn ancient greek.

``Gold'' in Ancient Greek is χρῡσός (whence Latin chrȳsos, of which chrȳsīs is the dative or ablative plural), and the adjective form was χρῡ́σῐνος. In Koine it became fashionable to use the diminutive χρυσάφιον instead, which gave rise to Modern Greek χρυσάφι, whence the adjective χρυσαφένιος. χρῡ́σῐνος was used alongside it well into Medieval times.
(Note that <υ> was /u(ː)/ in pre-Classical and non-Attic Classical Greek and usually /y(ː)/ in Classical Attic. The Romans usually spelled it <y> in their borrowings and also usually pronounced it /y/; it didn't become /i/ until much later. Likewise, <φ> didn't become /f/ until post-Classical times, so don't transcribe it as <f>; the Romans knew /f/ as a phoneme, and they transcribed <φ> as <ph> for a reason.)

It's not that books on Greek cost a fortune, it's that books on linguistics do. You don't need that, you need a language course. The single best one is Mastronarde's Introduction to Attic Greek, which you can get on Amazon for like $3.
The usual justification for linguistics reference works costing so much is that you're supposed to check them out of your university library for free. If you're not currently attached to a university, though, you're fucked, and it is indeed unconscionable. FWIW, the most I ever paid for a book was €250, for an etymological dictionary of Latin.

which you can get on Amazon for like $3.
There is no Amazon in Ukraine. And all Ukrainian books are in Ukrainian or Russian, which I don't understand and have no plans to learn, since I have no plans to stay in Ukraine.

I promise you most Amazon.co.uk sellers will ship to the Ukraine, and if there are any universities in your country, they will very likely also have copies available at university-adjacent bookstores even if they don't use it themselves, because it's just that popular. My university's Classical Philology program is taught entirely in Dutch and I found Mastronarde in three separate bookstores.

Traditionally video game monsters have Greek names
Really? I thought it was whatever post-Tolkein, gnostic, fantasy schlock bs Nip game devs think sound cool.

Vernacular and grammar isn't really learning the language though. I mean, like, it is a dead language, so you can't use it and therefore can't learn it per se. In a similar sense, I know English, but I don't have formal knowledge of etymology and grammar. Understanding a language formally is pretty much a separate thing. Just being pedantic, though.

you won't learn Greek from /anus/rider, but if you want a generator then try the classic way of doing this:
- get a large number of Greek texts transliterated to Latin alphabet, preferably ancient for that mythological feel
- divide them into letters, digraphs and trigraphs
- make Markov chains out of it
- spit out names from the chain

I can as well use Russian names. I.e. Nestor the Orc, Ksenia the Hydra, or Aglaya the Goblin. Although Russian names are based of Greek anyway :D

Hardly anyone speaks greek --- so you could just use a markov chain generator. The advantage to this solution is that it could easily be extended to monsters of other cultures.

https://www.samcodes.co.uk/project/markov-namegen/

You wouldn't be stuck between the Persians and the Dorians. A little worn out methinks.

Scrapped the dungeon name generator, since top-bottom naming approach doesn't really work that nice. Have to use bottom-up one, where dungeon name gets name from the existing random map generator features.
