another shitty meme

Name: Anonymous 2020-03-29 6:34

virgin web browser user

- thinks he protects his privacy by using a few shitty extensions
- "w-what's some good vpn addon guys?"
- uses shitty webapps and wastes his time on social media sites or watching meme videos on youtube
- google's bitch and tech corporations' slave

vs

ABSOLUTE BASED CHAD WGET USER

- wget is all he needs to gather useful information and knowledge
- has never heard of chromium or firefox in his life
- irc user
- spends his time studying science, programming languages or expanding his mind
- thinks css and js are bloated bullshit

Name: Anonymous 2020-03-29 8:13

The only absolute based chad wget user is Richard Stallman.
Others are poser, they lie to me and to themselves when they say they don't use a web browser.

Hax my anus, how’s that for a shitty meme

simple wget requests are blocked on many sites

they either read the useragent or something else from the headers and block it if it seems to not come from a genuine user on a web browser

also many sites won't function at all without js (not even display their content), they usually have a script inside that uses an xml http request to get the content and then insert the elements to the page accordingly (these are called dynamic web pages) Edited on 29/03/2020 16:02.

notice that it is just as I've said, there's an XMLHttpRequest first and a bunch of createElement, appendChild and similar later, plus it is obfuscated as fuck

in practice this means that to make use of this kind of web page you need to either emulate javascript somehow or decipher the js code yourself (may god help you) and replicate its action through automated, non-webbrowser means

I never thought I'd go full RSS, but I genuinely do scrape 90% of the sites I do with scrapers like wget via wget.el, youtube-dl, gallery-dl. I'm really lucky YouTube offers RSS, still, even if they don't explicitly advertise that they do. It's like how MacOS ships with an old version of Emacs and Bash. There are people in there who really do share our values, but that naivité is usually lost to time.

Why do you find older versions of Emacs and Bash better?

Name: Anonymous 2020-03-31 11:44

Ships zsh nowadays. But it's true. They even put esc back on the macbooks to accomodate vimmers. Some apple community girl said so on a podcast.

Actually there are more people than ever sharing them: g and hn made them mainstream. Luke Smith has thousands of clicks. All the youngsters rice arch.

Ships zsh nowadays.
Yes and before bash, the default shell in OSX was tcsh. Panther had bash as default shell. OSX was doomed to be a toy OS. I don't like bash and I don't like zsh. zsh tries to be tcsh but fails badly.
tcsh is the best interactive shell. And the worst for scripting. But scripting is done in POSIX sh anyway. Don't use bashisms in your scripts, please.
If you disagree it doesn't mean you have different preferences or habits. It means that you're an idiot. If you're not me, I will call you an idiot. Or maybe a faggot.

What's a serious OS then?

Windows 10 Professional Edition.

OpenVMS, z/OS, Solaris

Name: Anonymous 2020-03-31 17:06

Honestly I'm interested in Solaris for some time now. Dtrace, ZFS and Containers are (were?) ahead of everything. I just haven't got around to spend time.

Where does one start? Iloumous, Oracle Solaris, SmartOS?

Joyent fired some people recently and Cantrill made his own company so is it even alive anymore?

No, you're misinterpreting me. I'm saying that there was a point in time when Apple was more copyleft-leaning than it is today, and that's evidenced by the fact that they put free software in their proprietary operating system. But all of that passion was ultimately effaced by commercial necessity.

In a similar sense, there was a time when services like YouTube had a featureful API which included RSS, presumably because some of the people on the YouTube team themselves used RSS. But RSS is commercially inconvenient because it doesn't force people to use their platform the way having an account in order to maintain subscriptions does. Yet, RSS was probably grandfathered into their service because someone on YouTube still uses it, or RSS is incorporated into some function of the site.
