Given Wolfram's age, I think he got senile.

Cell automations are nice toys. In fact many video games, like Minecraft, have them. But I doubt you can get anything useful out of them by modelling real life physics. More luck with neural nets, which are like cell automatas, but work without knowing the full ruleset and the current state. I.e. you can use ANNs to simulate weather for a few days.

(The 256 color spherical automata mentioned above have complex, evolving patterns that seem life-like). Wolfram's graphs are a bit too bland for my tastes, though more geometrically complex.


I don't think you can cram everything into a single graph rewriting pattern(it would be extremely reductionist like 19th century view of Universe as deterministic particle soup, which Digital Physics is a distant relative of, but Turing-complete nevertheless).

Exactly. All these "fractal math" books were since beginning like a nice art books with cool pictures. And what developed out of them (i.e. Minecraft) is too a bunch of art projects. But yeah, Minecraft is the most successful art project up to date.
