I'm pretty sure the current roadblock is not with the layer arrangement, but with the general architecture. There is a limit of how much you can squeeze out of a single unit network, without breaking it into distinct subsystems. Human brain for example is composed of many processing units, which connect with each other, similarly to how you connect different co-processors on the circuit board.

So people just sit back for a moment, take a deep breath and approach the problem from different angle, trying to think out of the box. Otherwise you will soon get into psych-ward with terminal autism and acute OCD.
