I always just work through the documentation on the project website. I find books to be terrible and out of date. Most of the time it's not written by some core team member but by a nobody who doesn't really know what he's talking about.
I'm honestly interested in
/prog/'s approach on learning new stuff. I'm not sure mine is optimal. Sometimes it falls short because I don't know ``obvious" stuff which they forgot in the documentation but is mentioned when you learn it from a coworker or a book.
