Sheera Frenkel, Mike Isaac and Ryan Max have written an article of almost the same title on pages B1 and B4 of today's New York Times, but they call it "The Metamorphosis of Facebook."
If the pandemic becomes a permanent augment of our reality, many of us will become Neuromancers as coined by that wag up in British Columbia, my (I wish) buddy William Gibson who once told me at a book-signing that yes, maybe he had indeed heard of the Mentifex projecct in artificial intelligence (AI). Netizens on Usenet sneered at my report that William Gibson had heard of Mentifex, disabusing me of my preening pride by assuring me that the universe-famous (and soon metaverse-famous?) author William Gibson was only trying to be nice to me. Although I met him only that one time and so I stretch things by calling him my buddy, Gibson is truly a wag because he once rhetorically asked what was this "so-called cyberspace" without admitting that he, William "Neuromancer" Gibson, had himself coined, launched and originated the very term "cyberspace."
Friends! Proggers! Neuromancers! We come to bury cyberspace, not to praise it. Do you realize what is going to happen if Facebook has its way with us? In a world split into a wealthy but declining population and a poor but burgeoning population, the haves will once again lord it over the have-nots. The corporate workplace will become more virtual than ever, and the impoverished nations will experience mass die-offs,
just like the Ireland of 1848 when my Irish ancestors starved to death in the potato famine while their British overlords cruelly exported surplus wheat grown on stolen Irish lands. Just yesterday the NYT had an article about how the wealthy Zoomocrats are taking over the previously poor town of Ricon in Puerto Rico, where I have not been since I was seven years old and on my way to Panama.
