Inferring the Future

In the future each person will be granted fifteen minutes of anonymity. The surveillance will pause. The Doubleclick will cease and desist for fifteen minutes only. The mug-rec databases will delete all their files of you to guarantee a clean slate of Clearview mugshots.

His weirdness the Wotnot of Warholisms came to this anti-Warholian realization while eidetically speed-reading "Facial Recognition Goes Beyond the Hypothetical" today on NYT page A2.

Europeans have a "Right To Be Forgotten" and they can sue Google or B(ing)i(s)n(ot)g(oogle) to remove their personal information. Americans are legally forbidden to forbid things legally. In America you can pay a Reputation Improvement company to restore your good reputation that the same company has secretly ruined for you. Secrets that you want your relatives not to know are blown wide open when your household starts receiving advertisements pertaining to your private depravity.

Wotnot the Wannabe, the Nietzschean Nitwit, the Forever Failure, was dismayed in 2022 when his 563 autographed piece-of-art Forever-rare postcards were slow to appreciate in collector value, while free-wheelin' Simon & Swindler scammed the gullible public into paying outrageous premiums for machine-written fake celebrity autographs.

Google to reduce workforce by 12k

A message from our CEO

A difficult decision to set us up for the future

I have some difficult news to share. We’ve decided to reduce our workforce by approximately 12,000 roles.

I'm one of them. Been with the company for 3 years. Perf is in 1-2 months and manager said I'm on track for exceeding expectations (or whatever the new perf scale equivalent is), and I'm likely for a promotion.

I am (well... was) on call. Sorry to the poor engineer that has a few extra days of that now.

Manager reached out to me on LinkedIn, and they were not contacted or asked about the decision, and they feel awful and are completely blindsided by it.

Tried to log in remotely this morning, got some weird error, then got redirected to a layoff page.

Amazing.

You got laid off Fifth Element-style? They didn’t even tell you to your (virtual) face, they just sent you a note?

Correct. I got an email to my personal email titled "Notice regarding your employment" at around 5am this morning.

I normally don't check my personal email in the morning, and I work about 50/50 in office vs remote. If I had driven in, my badge simply wouldn't have worked, and the very nice front desk people would have had to tell me why. But today I chose to work remote and couldn't access anything.
