I don't think I would have enjoyed Higurashi the same if it had been a bunch of dicks and just one girl, though.

That's true. The cast being mostly girls made it easier to feel for them and like them in a way that I don't with male characters. I know how pathetic that sounds, but I don't mean to say that I wouldn't have enjoyed it: it's still a great story. Much like Touhou, it gives you an immerse world full of interesting characters, but only half the fun is in the game itself. The other half is discussing it and obsessing over your favorite characters and thinking about them. You get to feel their pain and happiness with them in a way that you don't in your own life.

That's not impossible to do with guys, of course, but it's much less ... interesting. Look at Shinji in Evangilon _{which I didn't particularly care about}. He's an angsty faggot, but has very good reasons to be. Still, I don't really care. Been there, done that. Get over it, chump. Or with Sato from NHK. I can empathize with his retardation a lot, but still, I don't care to discuss it years after reading the book. Or even Battler in Umineko. No one really cares about his bullshit feelings. He was just a vehicle to act as protagonist for the, then he had to ruin that and run to the witch side, which left most people feeling betrayed. It was hinted since at least EP2 that he was slowly falling in love with Beato and that he was increasingly conflicted (to the point that his sister being murdered right in front of him only kept him charging for a little while), but his feelings weren't important to most people. Myself included: he had one fucking job to do, and it wasn't obscure the mystery so he could fuck some schizo nullo queer. I never wanted to look at his thought process and understand why he did the things he did, as opposed to, say, Satoko, who was endearing immediately when her back story of abuse was revealed. It was easy to dwell on. ^{I think an exception to this was Keiichi himself. That may be because we got so much insight into his mind before having his sin dropped on us that it was impossible to not reevaluate him completely. Still, he is rarely discussed in Higurashi thread, so that may just be me.}
