It was the same instinct that made it so that when I walked over a crack in the sidewalk, I had to do it equally with the other foot. But then came the realization that I in fact put one foot on the crack first, and then the other. So I had to do it in reverse. Even today I still sometimes get like this. I can't stand walking on sidewalks. But at least I can somewhat control it and it doesn't debilitate me. I got sent to a lot of psychologists over it when I was a kid.
