Is Touhou a meme?

I can barely beat it on normal, but that's because I suck at games. The graphics suck and the projectiles are slow compared to other games in the genre. It's less like a shooting game and more like advanced Frogger. The only redeeming quality is the music.

The character concepts are interesting enough that a dedicated fanbase redrew all of them and made them into cute girls who actually look nice. This, the setting, the plot (I'm serious) and the music are the only redeeming qualities about it. Nobody knows how Touhou went from being totally unknown to having so many fans. The gameplay is bland at best but the universe resulting from this game is one of the best you can find, if you're into that. This is what keeps some players from quitting the game, the others still play it because they like unnecessarily difficult games.

Short answer: yes, it's a meme.
