Paganism is anti-globalist, anti-authoritarian, liberal - you worship your tree-stumps near your cozy village and engage in feasts and sex however you please.
Monotheism is centralized, estatist, totalitarian - there's a central god (and king/emperor as his viceroy on Earth) who watches you poop and will punish you for not paying taxes, fighting for your king, or for indulging in pleasures and weaknesses.
