He was building an empire, not a nation-state. Empires seek to destoy nations and fuse them into a single entity, nationalists seek to break away from empires and split into separatist nation-states. The very defining quality of an empire is that it contains more than one nation. When the Soviet Empire fell, there were about 15 nation states forming out of it. That's nationalism, and a reversal of what Stalin was doing. Your concept of nationalism is wrong.

This is obvious bullshit. What he did was install secret agents into the top ranks of the Church in order to control it. He only thought about Christianity as a way of controlling society to further his leftist goals. Today's leader of the Russian Communist Party is all Christianity-friendly too, he even says that there is the same moral code behind communism and Christianity.
