I have an ant problem in my apartment, possibly due to unseasonable weather. Whatever the underlying cause, they are everywhere. To combat them, I have been cleaning up after myself and whenever I see one I squash it or spray it with cleaning fluid. However today I was in the kitchen squashing ants and I noticed that one of the ants was carrying the squashed body of another ant as to for burial or other ritual. Up until that moment I had assumed ants were some kind of hive mind creature that didn't have a sense of individuality. But if it is true that ants can mourn their dead, then they must have individual consciousness and thus squashing them is akin to murder. This is very troubling.
