@mikechappell4156 5 days ago (edited) Linus is a person, not his foundation. He isn't known as a swell fellow. Linux was started because of a licensing issue. He generally makes logical decisions. But he doesn't want political debate on kernel forums. The kernel is his baby, he isn't encouraging political freedom and debate when discussing it, no one else's political feelings are important to him there. If you make technical arguments he isn't checking your politics. There is no need for political debate in technical forums. It is quite possible that the Linux foundation could be a social warrior project, but Linus actually appears to care more about the quality of code than politics. As for the stuff with the Russian developers ban, there was no reason why he or his foundation should pick a political fight regardless of his political stance.
The Lunduke Journal is more political than the mailing lists. I don't have a problem with that but the story is fairly hypocritical. 4

@MauDaFaca 5 days ago To be fair.... we cannot confuse personal views with a software project. Programs should be for the most part neutral. as for the developers, they are entitled to theyr opinions.

In America you don’t own anything (ownership is dominion and control) because of property taxes and eminent domain. There is no “democracy” either: if there were then there would be no property taxes as it is a thing everyone hates. A simple proof that this “democracy “ does not exist and never has. The only recourse for said supposed property owners is to use the same type of force that the state uses to evict property owners with. The state will hide its casualties: they can lose 1000 and claim only one was injured while crowing that they ended you: however at least it will cost those who choose to physically remove you. The same happened to the Irish with the English and this universal situation in America has the same solution.

I was there for an Advent Mass just a few months ago. We went to Midnight Mass for Christmas there every year. @grokitall 2 days ago I can remember back when windows xp came out seeing support for isa cards being removed due to nobody having any hardware to test code on. I also remember drivers being deprecated pending removal due to not having anyone care enough to step up and maintain it.
the main difference back then was that the bugs being reported were from real people finding real bugs on real hardware they were daily driving. this meant that you could enter a dialogue with them, and get them to test patches to fix the bug.
the issue you are highlighting is that because modern tools are being used against the entire code base, it is flagging up cases where it did not used to matter that a driver was unloved. once visible, they then enter the same unmaintained - deprecated - remove cycle that the kernel has always had. this was usually a many version pathways which i have seen in some cases take a couple of years to complete, and at any time someone can come along and say "i'm using that and will be the maintainer and tester" and the removal process stops.
supporting legacy hardware for backward compatability is not free, and one of the costs is the new capabilities you cannot add because the old code needs massive workarounds due to missing hardware features in older hardware. this is most easily seen with processors, where the old ones don't have some of the newer extensions, but you also see it with sound cards where they don't have pulse audio drivers, and are still running on alsa.
basically at some point you have to ask the question how much is it costing us to keep this unmaintained, untestable hardware without some modern features, and if the cost is too high, you have to move it onto the removal path.

@StCreed 2 days ago Anyone complaining: feel free to maintain the drivers yourself and bring them up to speed as a user-space project, not part of the kernel anymore. That wasn't a great decision anyway (drivers in kernel space have always been risky) so I'm happy to see them restricted to current and actual hardware. The code is still available for everyone to use.
