We're going down the shitter... and quickly, I might add.

Should I be sad or amazed that I will live to see the downfall of the United States of America?

Did you know that parts of the Roman empire existed for hundreds of years after its supposed "fall" that we read about in history books? There is only slow decline that you adapt to to the point you don't even recognize it anymore, there's never a perceived downfall to witness.

Byzantium lasted until 1453. It's a shame that it had to go. It would have been much preferred over the Ottoman horde. So much culture was lost over it. And all over petty religious disputes which don't even matter anymore.

Those "petty religious disputes" were actually common power struggles. You have to realize that in the Middle Ages religion was where the power was at: the Holy Roman Empire, the wars of protestants vs catholics, the Hussite rebellion, the Crusades, etc. To announce religious dissent was to lay claim to political independence or to another state's throne.

The modern world is much different from the times of the decay of Roman Empire. It is much more technologically advanced, globalized, populous, wealth-unequal, environmentally-depleted, culturally-deprived. The contemporary world order is just too sick and all-engulfing to quietly disintegrate. It can only blow up, and blow hard with infighting, epidemics, genocide, hunger, chemical weaponry etc.
