If your hdd is broken, then to fix it
- Stick your hard drive in the freezer
- Pop your hard drive into the oven
- Give it a few taps with a hammer or rubber mallet

all three solution are guaranteed to work!

I've personally repaired 9 hard drives that way: 6 for clients and 3 for my friends. Everybody is happy.

Make a nice campfire (if you are in a rural area) or a ghetto-oven from a barrel (if you are in an urban area).

When the fire is ablaze, put the HDD in the center of the fire. Keep the fire burning for at least an hour or so, in order to let the magnetized surface of the HDD platters to loose their orientation, or even melt if they are made of aluminium.

what if cops are already knocking at your door, and you hdd is full of unencrypted child porn?

You can mechanically damage HDD, but forensics experts have special hardware, where they can mount magnetic discs from any hdd and read them. So damaging HDD would only prolong your sentence by obstructing justice charges. Guess using SSD is the only viable alternative. You can quickly kill SSD by passing high voltage into it.

using strong magnet appears to erase entire hdd:

but police would likely still press the obstructing justice charges, if they find such magnet near hdd
