I've heard glib is nice to work with once you accept that you have to use gObject for fucking everything. I considered using it many times for personal projects before Gnome made it quite clear that they were actively searching for sharks to jump.

Gnome is shit. Unity is worse. KDE is only slightly less bad. all those big graphical environments which insist on their way of doing basic shit like drawing windows are cancer because they introduce lock-in to what should be modular and platform-independent. also, they're all big, slow and prone to feature creep. abandon them for a lightweight but functional TWM on top of X11 and never look back

TWM might be king of the lightweights and all, but FVWM is much nicer.

I like to do my programming in C. GTK is the only free modern GUI toolkit that works in C.

by TWM I mean 'tiling' as a general concept, not 'tab' as a specific (not really tiling) manager. personally, I'm using awesome but I wish they stayed with flat config files instead of scripts

You don't need to use a ``modern'' toolkit.

Give up on C and use C++/FLTK.
