programming / computer websites that aren't shit

Name: Anonymous 2013-12-09 17:41

http://nocash.emubase.de/ - guy who writes everything in asm and still uses win95

http://templeos.org/ - guy who wrote a compiler and an OS and 3d games and now writes incoherent rants about God and the BBC that are amusing to read

http://www.t3x.org/ - guy who wrote compiler for C and scheme and wrote textbooks about them

http://prog21.dadgum.com/ - pretty good for a blog

http://bellard.org/ - another talented programmer

http://toastytech.com/ - the gui museum is nice

http://channel9.msdn.com/Series/History - old microsoft VHS tapes

do you have anymore good ones /prog/ ? i'm craving for good computer sites. is it me or in 2013 99.99% of all sites is "a shitload of javascript garbage and DRM and Ads and bullshit up your ass" ? why don't people make these oldschool plain HTML sites with good fucking content on them anymore ?

I think, sadly, that your list is pretty comprehensive for computer science / programming related personal sites.

Here's two sites that I like:

http://carlossicoli.free.fr/ - large library of very advanced level mathematics texts (direct links; can wget; ~3700 books totaling ~16GB)

http://lib.freescienceengineering.org/ - large library with most books that are available online as PDFs or DJVUs (used to be libgen.info)

http://templeos.org/ - guy who wrote a compiler and an OS and 3d games and now writes incoherent rants about God and the BBC that are amusing to read
Man, I swear I've never heard of this guy before. Thank you for this detailed description on a character no one on /prague/ has ever heard of!

http://libgen.net still works, and so does that http://gen.rus.ec.edu.whatever domain.

Not OP, but seconding the ``Fuck Google Groups'' sentiment. Occasionally I have to read posts by people who refuse to use a real news client, the formatting errors are absolutely atrocious, and have been getting worse as time goes on. I don't blame Google from doing it, they want to get everybody moved onto Buzz, or whatever their attempt at social networking is this year, but I can at least blame the people who use it. They're almost worse than topposters.

here's another good site

http://advsys.net/ken/

Name: Anonymous 2013-12-14 4:42

http://datagenetics.com/blog.html

I like this one, it ties in computer science and various other disciplines in many different problems.

What is Cat-V really about? I've known about it for years. I've been in their websites many a time but never understood what that site is all about.

essentially.

it's kind of a programmer hipster site that bashes on lots of mainstream softwares like linux java windows firefox C++ XML and that has a fan club for C and unix.

i still think some of the programmer quotes are nice, some of tehm are more of the "advice" kind and less butthurt bullshit

and don't forget the faggot uriel killed himself because rob pike wouldn't give him the D.

also who is ron paul (i'm not murrican btw)

do you have any excerpts of mr. pike explicitly saying he's disguting, that would be amsuing

>>27

xah lee, another /prog/ celebrity. didn't he ask for money on the old /prog/ at some point in 2011 or 2012 ?

Name: Anonymous 2013-12-20 4:24

Well then why does he have such a hate-boner against GPL, if he's such a staunch libertarian? Is it just because it's hip and trendy to bash GPL among the kind of computing elitists who would become cat-v regulars?

Name: Anonymous 2013-12-20 5:13

>>29
From a certain viewpoint that could be held by libertarians, the GPL is less attractive than other licenses because it places some restrictions on what you may do with the code. Perhaps the guy once wanted to sell a product which would have used a GPL'd component internally, and found that legally he wasn't allowed to.

I think there's a simpler reason, however. The GPL is really fucking long. Compared to the MIT or N-clause BSD licenses, it's a EULA. cat-v really seems to value terse writing.

Cat-v believes that terse is beautiful and that anything that is not terse is bloated and harmful.

Remember that having similar problems doesn't imply that the solutions are also similar. If you're solving two different problems in exactly the same way, then this maxim applies.

ftp://x2ftp.oulu.fi used to be my favorite programming FTP dump, however the guy at the University of Oulu who maintained it abandoned it when he moved on.

There's lots of ancient DOS and C64 stuff. You can find a mirror of it here:
